What Teachers Asked For—and How Your Feedback Is Shaping What’s Next

January is a natural reflection point for educators. Classroom routines are established, student needs are clearer, and teachers begin thinking about what’s working now and how to plan ahead.

Over the past year, teachers shared clear feedback about classroom pets: they see the benefits every day, but they need more time, easier access, and smoother support to make it work in real classrooms. That feedback continues to shape how Pets in the Classroom evolves.

More Time to Plan: Earlier Grant Applications

Teachers told us that timing matters. Bringing a classroom pet into a learning environment requires planning, responsible care routines, and preparation—not last-minute decisions.

In response, grant applications now open earlier, giving teachers more time to plan for the upcoming school year. For educators already thinking ahead, this change provides valuable flexibility.

Grant Timeline Overview

  • May 1: Final day to apply for 2025–2026 grants
  • May 31: Receipt upload deadline for 2025-2026 school year
  • May 2–June 30: Applications closed for maintenance
  • July 1: Applications open for the 2026–2027 school year

Expanded Eligibility: Supporting PreK–12 Classrooms

Teachers also shared that classroom pets are impactful beyond early grades. Middle and high school educators use pets to support engagement, responsibility, and classroom culture.

Eligibility has expanded to include PreK–12 teachers, allowing more classrooms to participate. As educators plan upcoming units or next year’s classroom environment, this change ensures more students can benefit from animal-assisted learning.

Making the Program Easier to Use

Teacher feedback also guided improvements to the website and grant application process. Updates were made to simplify navigation, clarify expectations, and make participation easier.

These changes help teachers spend less time troubleshooting and more time creating meaningful learning experiences with classroom pets.

Why This Matters Now

January is when classroom realities are clear and planning begins. Teacher feedback collected over the past year isn’t just shaping future ideas – it’s driving improvements teachers can use as they prepare for the rest of this school year and beyond.

We’re Still Listening

Whether you’re navigating the remainder of this school year or planning ahead, your feedback continues to guide how Pets in the Classroom grows and improves.
