We have a guinea pig in the school library. Before adopting this pet, I read many studies about the valuable role companion animals play in the healthy development of children, particularly in regards to pro-social skills and empathy. As we all know, it can be intimidating to speak in front of a group of people. Especially for my students that are low readers, they never wanted to participate or read aloud. But now, I have many that will grab a book, head over to our pet, and practice reading out loud to him. They know that he will not judge them. He is just there to listen. They have gained so much confidence and the guinea pig has been a motivator for them to read independently. Bonding with a pet has helped their emotional expression of affection. I have seen a decrease in problem behaviors, especially in my male students. The guinea pig is a calming presence. Our sub-separate teacher said he viewed the guinea pig as “therapeutic” for his students with autism. Taking care of an animal has taught them responsibility. He has helped them to manage stress and gain confidence as learners.
