Each year, the Pets in the Classroom Success Story Video Contest gives teachers the opportunity to showcase the incredible impact their classroom pets are having on students — and to inspire other educators to experience the same benefits.

If you’ve seen firsthand how your classroom pet is making a difference, this is your chance to share that story.

You do not need professional editing.
We are not looking for Hollywood.
We are looking for heart.

An authentic story filmed on your smartphone is exactly what we want to see. Here are some tips to help you catch the judges’ eyes:

1. Start with Research

Before you begin filming, explore past winning entries at https://www.youtube.com/@petcaretrust/playlists

Watching previous winners can:

  • Spark ideas
  • Inspire creative approaches
  • Show you what resonates with judges
  • Help you see different storytelling styles that work

A few minutes of research can help you create a stronger, more confident entry.

2. Tell a Clear, Meaningful Story

Great videos show impact!

You can focus on:

  • One powerful moment
  • A few short examples
  • A “day in the life”
  • A transformation over time
  • Or a creative perspective (even from the pet’s point of view!)

Consider sharing:

  • How your pet helped you or your classroom overcome a barrier
  • How your students achieved a specific goal because of your pet
  • Why you believe pets should be in more classrooms

However you tell it, help us clearly see how your classroom pet supports:

Social Growth

Students building responsibility, cooperation, classroom community, and stronger peer relationships.

Emotional Growth

Increased empathy and compassion, reduced anxiety, improved confidence and self-esteem.

Academic Growth

Greater engagement, improved attendance, stronger participation, and enhanced academic performance.

Tip: Specific examples are powerful. Show us real interactions and real outcomes.

3. Simple Filming Tips That Make a Big Difference

You don’t need special equipment. Just keep these basics in mind:

✔ Choose the Best Orientation

Film vertically or horizontally –  just keep your framing steady and intentional.

✔ Keep It Focused

Your video should hold attention and clearly communicate your message. Edit out long pauses or repetitive sections.

✔ Start Strong

Open with your most compelling moment or statement.
Example:
“Before we brought our classroom pet in, my students struggled with…”

✔ Use Good Lighting

Make sure light is shining on your students and pet — not behind them.

✔ Think About Audio

Classrooms are loud. If needed, use a mic or record the video first and then add a short voiceover in a quiet space to clearly explain the impact.

4. Show Real Interaction

Strong entries often include:

  • Students safely interacting with the pet
  • Students participating in care routines
  • A teacher explaining the impact
  • Genuine student reactions

Let viewers see the connection between students and the pet.

5. The Golden Rule: Safety First

All entries must demonstrate safe and appropriate animal handling.

Videos showing unsafe practices or improper care will be disqualified.

Let’s model responsible pet ownership for the world.

Final Thought

Your classroom pet is already making a difference.

Now press record and show us how your students are growing — socially, emotionally, and academically.

We can’t wait to see your story.
