Riley the Hamster’s Story at Academic Magnet High School

In classrooms across the country, pets are often introduced as learning tools. But sometimes, they become something far more powerful.

At Academic Magnet High School in North Charleston, South Carolina, one small hamster named Riley became a source of connection, comfort, and hope during one of the school’s most difficult moments. Her story, shared by teacher Katy Metzner-Roop, reminds us that the impact of a classroom pet can reach well beyond lesson plans.

Meeting Riley

“I adopted Riley the hamster in the summer of 2024. No one wanted her at the pet shop, and I can’t imagine why. She is the sweetest little creature. My high school students love her.”

Riley the hamsterFrom the start, Riley became a shared responsibility. Students didn’t just observe her; they cared for her together.

“They have a ‘Riley’s Crew’ and they take care of her. They’re allowed to have her out in class if they do all their work and clean up the lab. She runs around on the tables or cruises around the floor in her ball.”

This simple routine created a sense of ownership and pride—students working together, earning trust, and building community around a living being that depended on them.

A School in Mourning

In October, the school faced an unimaginable loss.

“October of this year was awful and we suffered a terrible loss. A long-term, very beloved, teacher passed away. All of us – students, faculty, staff – were devastated. There was an overwhelming sadness throughout the school.”

In the midst of that grief, another blow followed.

“During this time, one of Riley’s Crew accidentally left her cage open and she escaped in the night.”

What could have been another source of despair instead became a spark of collective action.

When Riley Went Missing

Wanted - Missing classroom Pet“Once we realized what happened, Riley’s Crew sprung into action. They organized search parties. They tried to make traps. The principal got involved – he put up ‘wanted’ signs with Riley’s picture. The students posted it on social media and the news went viral.”

Students across grade levels—many who had never set foot in Katy’s classroom—were suddenly united by a shared mission.

“I was finally able to get a live trap and we deployed it. We caught her (safe and healthy, but a bit perturbed) a few days later.”

Joy Returns to the School

The reaction was immediate and overwhelming.

“The whole school rejoiced. They were so happy – I was getting hugs and high fives from students I didn’t even teach.”

What followed was creativity, celebration, and connection.

“The French teacher wrote an ode to Riley. This inspired Spanish students to write poems for Riley. The newspaper had a contest for a creative essay – What Was Riley Doing During Her Time Free?”

One idea stood out.

“My favorite was that she is a spy and she’s always been doing it but this is the first time we noticed.”

Riley’s story became part of school history.

“Her story is going to be in the yearbook. The athletic director declared it ‘Riley the Hamster’s Return from Peril Day’ and changed the school mascot to the Fighting Hamsters for the day.”

Why Classroom Pets Matter

Katy’s reflection captures what research and teacher experiences consistently show: classroom pets create meaningful impact across social, emotional, and academic growth.

Social Growth
Students worked together, organized themselves, and supported one another during a shared challenge. Riley’s disappearance and return united the school in cooperation and collective responsibility.

Emotional Growth
“This is why I give thanks for Riley, my classroom hamster. She brought us all together and gave us a purpose.”

In a time of grief, Riley became a source of comfort, hope, and healing.

“Finding her was the joy that we all needed in our lives at that time. It broke us out of the dark cloud and brought some sunshine and light into our school.”

Academic Growth
Riley inspired writing, creativity, problem-solving, and engagement across multiple subjects—from poetry and essays to storytelling and school journalism—demonstrating how pets naturally support learning beyond traditional instruction.

A Small Pet, a Lasting Impact

“I will forever be thankful for Riley for being there when I (and others) needed her.”

Riley’s story is a reminder that classroom pets aren’t just companions. They are catalysts—for empathy, connection, and learning—especially when students need them most.

At Academic Magnet High School, one hamster helped an entire community rediscover joy. And that is the quiet, powerful magic of pets in the classroom.
