It’s a New School Year!

The Pet Care Trust is thrilled to announce that the Pets in the Classroom grant program is now accepting applications for the 2026–2027 school year! Dedicated to enhancing students’ educational and personal development, the program provides essential funding for teachers to introduce or maintain small animals in their learning environments.

The Pets in the Classroom grant program offers financial support for small animals or pet supplies to Pre-K through 12th-grade teachers in both private and public schools across the U.S. and Canada. Recognizing that many educators have limited resources for animal care, the program provides a “no-hassle” application process on its website to ensure support is easily accessible.

Grant Options and Retail Partners

Teachers can choose the grant type that best fits their classroom needs:

• Store Account Grants: Obtain a pet and/or supplies through participating retailers, including Petco, PetSmart, Pet Supplies Plus, and Petland.
• Rebate Grants: Purchase a pet or supplies from a local pet store and receive a rebate.
• Sustaining Grants: Past recipients can apply for up to $50 to maintain an existing pet or purchase a new one for their classroom.

A Holistic Approach to Learning

In addition to funding, the program offers a wealth of free resources, including standards-based lesson plans with a significant focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

“Education is at the center of everything we do,” said Melinda Thomas, Executive Director of Pet Care Trust. “By providing these grants, we give children the opportunity to interact with pets—an experience that helps shape their lives for years to come”.

The Trust also continues to champion the Dogs in the Classroom program. In partnership with leading therapy dog organizations,  the program brings thoroughly screened therapy animal teams into schools for visits to improve student well-being.
